THE AREA

Villefranche-sur-Mer

The most photographed bay on the coast, and the hardest to reach in August.

The bay is one of the deepest in the Mediterranean, which explains the cruise ships and, with them, the summer traffic. The old village keeps its covered lanes and its fishing harbour; it is walked, and you have to like it that way.

Properties set high escape the congestion of the sea front: you reach them by the middle corniche, with the view thrown in. The heights keep a rural character — dry-stone terraces, olive trees, private tracks — that the coast has lost elsewhere.

It is a town where the price gap between the bay shore and the heights is narrower than expected. The view is paid for, and so is the access.
